If you are pushing enough power to need an alternator upgrade then its definitely time for the Big 3. WTF is the big three? Auto parts : Distributor Magnetic Drive Assembly Acura 1995 . Sterling . How to Adjust Ford Drum BrakesMany times restoring proper brake pedal height and parking brake function is just a matter of adjusting the rear drum brakes on your Ford vehicle. As the brake shoes wear, the distance between the shoe and the drum increases. This causes the brake pedal or parking brake lever/pedal to move farther before the shoes make contact with the drum. Adjustment of the Ford drum brake system is well within the average home mechanic's ability. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Jack stands Wheel chocks Lug wrench Drum brake adjusting tool Step by Step : 1 Place wheel chocks behind the front wheels to prevent vehicle movement when the rear wheels are off. Raise the rear of the vehicle with the floor jack, and place jack stand under the frame. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands to support the weight of the vehicle. Never rely on the floor jack alone to support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheels and place them, along with the lug nuts, out of the work area. This prevents tripping hazards, and lug nut loss. 2 Remove the drum, and inspect the rear brake shoes and drum for damage. Locate the star wheel adjuster. This serrated wheel shaped piece is between the lower edges of both shoes. As the wheel is turned, it expands on contracts the shoes. Remove the rubber plug in the back of the backing plate behind the star wheel adjuster. 3 Install the drum onto the shoes. Turn the star wheel with the brake-adjusting tool, until the shoes contact the drum. The shoes should not be so tight that the drum cannot turn, but there should be a slight drag on the drum as it is turned. 4 Reinstall the wheels and lower the vehicle. Check parking brake function by applying the parking brake, and putting the vehicle in gear. The parking brakes should hold under slight torque load from the engine. Sterling . How to Adjust Brake Drums on a CordiaThe Cordia uses a rear drum braking system that requires routine maintenance to operate properly. The adjustment screw on the bottom of the brake assembly often needs attention and is only accessible by removing the drum cylinder. The average backyard mechanic can adjust the brakes on a Cordia in about 20 minutes. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Jack stand Socket set Screwdrivers Vice grips Step by Step : 1 Raise the Cordia by using the floor jack, pumping the lever until the wheel is in the air. Place the jack stand onto a frame rail for support. 2 Remove the wheel by turning the lug nuts counterclockwise. Pull the wheel from the hub and set it aside. 3 Remove the drum by turning the keeper screw counterclockwise, then sliding the drum directly away from the brake assembly. 4 Locate the adjustment bolt at the bottom of the brake assembly, between the shoes. Normally, this bolt should have very little play at rest. If it is excessively loose, pinch one end while turning the other clockwise to expand it against the shoes. The length of this adjustment bolt determines the retracted position of the shoes; if the bolt is too long, the shoes will drag on the inside of the drum. If it is too short, the brakes may not apply enough friction to stop the car. Simply tighten the nut by hand, and test each adjustment with a short drive. 5 Replace the drum by sliding it over the shoes, pressing it to the back of the brake assembly. Replace the keeper screw by turning it clockwise into the drum, lining it up with the hole on the hub. 6 Replace the wheel by turning all of the lug nuts clockwise, in an alternating pattern. 7 Let the Cordia down from the jack stands by using the floor jack to raise it higher, then turning the pressure screw on the jack counterclockwise slowly. Tips & Warnings Check the shoes for worn material while the drum is off. Check the wheel cylinder for leaking or damage while the drum is off. Use extreme caution when working underneath a vehicle. *you become familiar with a job, you always run the risk of undertightening or overtightening things. If you're replacing a spark plug and you don't tighten it enough, it will work itself loose and fail to deliver a spark. If you overtighten a spark plug, you can strip the threads or crack the plug. Similarly, parts that have gaskets can leak if the bolts that hold them aren't tightened enough. But if you overtighten the same bolts, the gaskets will be crushed, causing the fluid to leak anyway. Most really good torque wrenches are expensive, but a cheaper one is good enough to serve your purposes. If you'd rather not spend the money until you're sure that you're really going to like working on your car, borrow a torque wrench just to get the feel of how tight a nut, bolt, or other part should be. Or you can just forget the whole thing. I've never used a torque wrench; my set of socket wrenches accomplished everything quite well for the work in this book. If you are planning to buy a torque wrench, get one 162

If you use a torque wrench, keep the following in mind: Grip a torque wrench well down the shaft (not up close to the dial) and operate it smoothly. ' Tighten a series of nuts or bolts in a sequence that distributes the pres sure evenly, instead of in strict clockwise or counterclockwise order. Sterling . How do you know if your truck is 4 wheel drive?
Isuzu VehiCROSS. * When tightening a series of bolts, tighten them all just until they're snug. Then go back and tighten them all a bit more. Then go back and tighten them all the way to the torque specifications. Doing so ensures that the entire part you're tightening is under even pressure, prevents leaky gaskets, and increases the life of the bolt and the part. This and the preceding tips are good to follow when you're using any kind of wrench to tighten anything. Before using a torque wrench, make sure that the nut or bolt turns freely so that the torque wrench gets a true reading of the proper nut tightness. You can use a lubricant such as WD-40 on the threads and run the nut up and down a few times to free it before using the torque wrench on it. Part I: Getting Started. Adjustable Frenches An adjustable wrench, sometimes called a monkey wrench, is a useful addi tion to your toolbox. (See Figure 2-11.) You probably already have one in the house. You can adjust the jaws to fit a variety of nuts and bolts simply by turning the wheel. I like the very small and medium sizes because they fit into tight spaces easily. Figure 2-11: Sterling . In auto repair, you use a hammer to "sweet talk" something loose (like a nut or bolt that's on too tight). You don't use a hammer to whack the tar out of your engine. Sterling .
